Edit: Warning: No Dist-Upgrade

Posted by x-un-i on Feb 15, 2010 - 10:14 AM | Share This

Actually dist-upgrading  today can break KDE and KDM login is no longer possible!

If you already have this problem, please use the following fix:

 apt-get install kdelibs-bin=4:4.3.4-1 kdelibs5=4:4.3.4-1

to do so you need a line for the testing repository in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list

the line looks like :

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free

you need to then apt-get update to tell apt about the change before  installing the above packages

EDIT

The last mirror sync brought fixed packages of kdelib*  4:4.3.4-1+b2

If you have those on your mirror, dist-upgrade is save again.

sidux-2009-04-moros.torrent

Posted by bfree on Dec 31, 2009 - 06:10 AM | Share This

Following up from the torrent for 2009-03 you can now find the trackerless torrent file for 2009-04 here.

Update

I think it's time to give up on trackerless torrents for now (though some data has been transferred) so use this tracked torrent file for 2009-04. Apart from anything else the meta-trackers don't seem to like the untracked torrents.

kexec-tools in 2009-03

Posted by bfree on Nov 26, 2009 - 04:53 PM | Share This

kexec allows you to reboot into a new kernel without touching the bios or your bootloader. It was added to 2009-03 and was meant to have LOAD_KEXEC=false preset by debconf in /etc/default/kexec so people wouldn't get a possibly nasty suprise when they reboot. A bug crept in, wasn't caught and 2009-03 shipped with LOAD_KEXEC=true, which is the default in Debian.

Surprise

If you installed with 2009-03, until you dpkg-reconfigure kexec-tools you will not get the choice to select another OS or change boot options if you reboot rather then shutdown and restart!

sidux e.V. is pleased to present to you today a DVD version of Seminarix based on sidux. This is an educational project that merges Seminarix with the base of sidux. Seminarix aims at introducing educators as well as pupils to free and open software to make computer training in schools less costly and more effective. The project was initiated in March 2007 by Wolf-Dieter Zimmermann, who works in the education of students working for a teaching diploma. First based upon Kubuntu, sidux e.V. started to port it to sidux with the help of educators and interested users. With sidux as a powerfull free and open Linux distribution the Seminarix project now has a fast, easy to maintain and always current base.

sidux torrent

Posted by bfree on Nov 11, 2009 - 04:06 PM | Share This

The best way to get a sidux iso is from the mirror servers. There are http, ftp and rsync services on offer.

Some people just love torrents though, so rather then having partial unofficial torrents out there I decided to publish a semi-official torrent.

Current Kernel Exploit

Posted by devil on Nov 04, 2009 - 01:20 PM | Share This

The current Kernel exploit will be published very soon and so become exploitable.

Current sidux kernels are not affected.

Every user can test easily by running:  sysctl vm.mmap_min_addr

This should return a non-zero value

If it returns zero (possible with quite old sidux kernels) please update your kernel immediately

Should it be zero with a current sidux kernel (because an application, e.g. wine has set it to 0) do:

 # echo "vm.mmap_min_addr = 4096" > /etc/sysctl.d/mmap_min_addr.conf

 # /etc/init.d/procps restart

Nepomuk and Strigi

Posted by devil on Aug 29, 2009 - 09:47 AM | Share This

KDE4 brings about new technologies for the desktop. Next to Akonadi there is Nepomuk. Nepomuk is a project of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and was adopted for KDE4, promising the semantic desktop.

The semantic desktop, derived from the term semantic web tries to make meaningful connections of data and information on our computers across different filetypes. This is done with the universal filetype Resource Description Framework (RDF). More in depth information on the semantic desktop can be found under http://nepomuk.semanticdesktop.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main1/Project+Objectives . Nepomuk also brings along Strigi for indexing and desktopsearch. It will be interesting to see what Nepomuk will bring about in the future.

After our web site got a new default design and we have added a blog, we also offer a new download module – thanks to Xadras. It is much easier now to find the right ISO file fitting to your needs. The wizard is guiding you through the process, and everything can be selected with a few mouse clicks.

But much more has happened under the hood:

State of the sidux Manuals

Posted by bluewater on Aug 04, 2009 - 07:56 AM | Share This
Greetings all,

I thought I should give some information on the state of the sidux Manuals.

The sidux Operating System Manual:
After nearly 2 and a half years of frantic development, the pace slowed to a more sedate rate in the last few months. (Much to the relief of the translation team I might add!!!).

Switching to Input-Hotplug with X.org 1.6 (Part1)

Posted by slam on Aug 01, 2009 - 08:08 PM | Share This
(Original article by devil at 2009-05-16 in the previous blog) -- As already posted in the news entry "POSTALERT: Xserver-Xorg 1.6 is here" (see [1]) the upgrade to Xorg 1.6 brings about some changes and new features.
The main changes are with input device handling (mouse, keyboard, touchpad, etc.), which from now on can be handled by HAL instead of X.org.
HAL (hardware abstraction layer) or more precisely hald (hal-daemon) is a service that governs connected devices in realtime (see [2]).

Welcome to the sidux Blog!

Posted by slam on Aug 01, 2009 - 08:04 PM | Share This

Hi future bloggers,

welcome to the sidux blog.

We hope that people from sidux-dev and the sidux team will give the community a bit more of a clue on whats happening behind the scenes.  I believe bloggers and readers could both benefit from this and maybe we get some more users interested in being part of sidux development.

Ideas to make this an interesting place are highly welcomed.

Thanks to devil for this great idea, and the initial articles.
